Kaskinen – Beyond the Bridges?
If you want to visit Kaskö, you first have to cross the water, because Kaskinen is located on a small island. You can get there via Närpiö and the so-called Lock Bridge, or by taking the newer road from the east over dammed bays. Along this route, the sea opens up to the south. It's a beautiful drive.
Once in Kaskinen, you enter the grid plan area, which was already designed back in 1767. At Raatihuoneenkatu 48, you'll find Kaskinen Local Heritage Museum, which is well worth a visit. It's open every day during the summer. This year, the town of Kaskinen is celebrating its 240th anniversary. There will be a lot of events and activities throughout the summer and autumn.
Art, Artists, and Films
One of the museum’s most charming summer spots is the punch veranda, overlooking the garden. Factory owner Renström was known for his punch, which was produced at his distillery. Back in the day, the garden extended all the way down to Hamngatan, where the factory was located. Last year, the relocation of the Fisherman's Cottage from 1839 was completed. The cottage is now decorated as a fisherman's home. A maid’s room was also added to the museum building itself, located behind the kitchen.
Seasonal Program:
A new Museum Shop has been set up at the entrance, where visitors can immediately browse products for sale: self-published books, older editions of the Christmas magazine, books about Kaskö written by locals, and more. The latest in-house publication, “Strömingan och päronen” ("The Herring and the Potatoes"), received significant attention in 2024.
A new animated film and exhibition about Johan Bladh and the city's founder Peter Johan Bladh are being presented.
Last year, the animated film about Chief Farmer Johan David Cneiff premiered. It was highly praised and can still be viewed. The films are 13 minutes long.
A unique exhibition featuring beautiful original drawings of the town's old, protected wooden houses is also on display. There is now research available providing historical context for these older buildings. This material is especially interesting for property owners, who may also find related images in our photo gallery. These pictures can be purchased, for example, for framing. Imagine a homeowner from a past century hanging on your wall!
On Sunday 6 July at 6:00 PM, the Bladh family invites you to a coffee gathering in 18th-century style with entertainment; admission €15. Staff will be dressed in elegant period costumes.
During the weekend of 16–17 August from 1 PM to 5 PM, the museum will take part in the Wooden House and Renovation Fair, held in conjunction with the city’s 240th anniversary. The museum and the Fisherman's Cottage are excellent examples of how old wooden houses can be preserved — and even moved. We are proud to showcase our cultural and architectural heritage, located at Rådhusgatan 48. Admission to the museum is free that weekend. At the same time, European Heritage Days will be observed under the theme "Our Built Heritage."
